Moors and Christians: The past comes to life

Published by admin alle 12:51 pm in the category Did you Know?

AlcoiIf you want to live one of the most colourful experiences in the region of Valencia, the time is now.  On 22, 23 and 24 April Alcoy celebrates the Moors and Christians Festival. Only one hour away from

Valencia by car, with good connection by train and bus, this city offers a 3 day commemoration to its patron: Saint Jordiet (St. George). The saint appeared in the middle of a decisive battle in XIIbalconies.jpgI century and helped the Christian Knights gain victory over the dangerous Saracen.  On the first day of the festival a parade of the Christians and the Moors can be observed in the streets of the City. If you get a reserved seat to watch the show, you would be a smart and lucky one. And even better if you hire a balcony and share the price with your friends – the bird-eye view is always better.   The Christians lines remind the times of the Spanish Reconquista, while the Moors give us an exotic “one thousand and one nights” breeze.

Christian Knights   Moors    The second day is dedicated to acts of gratitude to Saint George from the people of Alcoy and the culmination of the festival comes with the battle organised in the centre of the city. A special castle is built on Plaza de España, symbolising the city. First, it is conquered by the Moors but the appearance of Saint George turns the control back to the hands of the Cristians.  Three days of music, dance and explosion of colours. You can see this celebrations in many villages of

Valencia, but we do recommend you to visit Alcoi, where the festival originated in XVI c. Have fun! … And don’t forget to share your experience with us. Moros y Cristianos, Alcoi: 22, 23, 24 April moorish.jpg
